Located in North Platte, Nebraska, Hope Esperanza is dedicated to empowering underserved seniors, youth, and their families. While their initial focus was the large Hispanic community, their efforts now embrace all underserved people in the area. Their goal is community empowerment by fostering “self-sustaining families” and ensuring access to vital resources. A Holistic Approach to Wellness
Hope Esperanza embraces an approach that emphasizes both the material and the social needs that govern health. When a person lacks basic needs like employment, housing, food, and safety, these needs affect their health. In addition, a supportive social network is vital for maintaining good health. To further the goal of empowering their clients to live healthy, fulfilling lives, Hope Esperanza has joined forces with other organizations and agencies in their area to help promote a sense of belonging among their clients through community empowerment and engagement. These organizations provide a variety of services that help meet underserved clients’ needs both material and social.
The Ripple Effect: Creating Belonging
Hope Esperanza’s founder, TinaMaria Fernandez, created the organization to meet the needs of a growing underserved, minority community struggling with unemployment, poverty, and lack of opportunity. However, they also understood that helping youth, seniors and families achieve a sense of belonging is just as important as providing for their basic needs.
That’s why Hope Esperanza offers a variety of community empowerment programs designed to help their clients feel like a part of their larger community. Some of the programs include the following:
- Welcoming with Hope: Welcoming coordinators greet newcomers to the community with a welcoming toolkit and language assessment.
- Building Hope in Community: This program offers newcomer meetings, English as a second language (ESL) classes, discussion forums and more – all aimed at integrating newcomers into their new environment.
- Hope for the Future: This program focuses on youth with after school programs, a youth advisory board, community service projects and other youth activities designed to help children and teenagers feel that they are an integral part of their community.
- Hope for Health: This program offers vaccine clinics, transportation to and from doctor appointments, a community gym and a community health fair.
- Direct Services: These services include food and clothing assistance, employment services, family advocacy and transportation assistance.
Our Partnership in Action
